Seems like folks are equally divided on setting new year’s resolutions versus making goals. Resolution-making and I parted in 2014; there just wasn’t enough “umph” in the resolutions I thought of to keep me committed beyond a few months. What a waste of time!

Goal-setting became more practical as I honed in on outlining my business plan: pre-launch. In fact, setting goals became necessary in order to end my love affair with procrastination. For years, I had convinced myself that I was a functional procrastinator who worked best under pressure: big, fat lie, ya’ll. There’s no sham quite like lying to yourself. Self-deceit is a nasty driver that steers you right down self-destruction lane. Am I telling that truth or nah?
1997 was a delightful year. I finished my college coursework for an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice/Business and started working in law enforcement full-time. That was a real dream come true. Reality set in quickly though; I was raised by an entrepreneur and being an employee for long wasn’t in my plans. Oh, except then there was this thing called “adulting” that reared up and took a hold of me. I had grand visions of opening up a roller skating rink and had begun researching that industry. It made sense; after all, I was an avid skater and seemed “passionate” about skating whenever I got to my favorite stress outlet — the rink.
My point…14 years of grand visions and outlining my business goals in my red, spiral notebook, did not get me a skating rink. On November 29, 2014, I got a vision alright…in a midnight dream — and it had nothing to do with the 14 year’s worth of planning I’d done.
I did launch a business on January 2, 2015…after listening to something other than my ego. I drove quickly away from “Seeking Validation” boulevard and made a right turn to the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) to seal the deal on registering Ascent Small Business Promotion, LLC.

As for that skating rink…a Harley Davidson dealership took the property that I wanted years ago. I spent many afternoons this summer riding my bike passed their business. See that? I didn’t spend afternoons behind a desk or glued to a laptop. Nope. I have time and mind freedom plus a company that functions even without me in it everyday. I dropped my ego, went with the better plan, and you can too.
